Maybe those who genuinely want to thank others for faves to be polite and are actually thankful should send a note so those who dislike it won't think of it as a cheap way of self advertising for more people to see them, which some tend to think so... and some people actually do use this technique of saying 'thanks for the fave' on peoples profiles as self advertising.
But then again it's kind of hard to tell if people really mean it or not when some people do use it like that. But I'd find their thanks more genuine if it wasn't displayed on profiles, cause you don't need everyone to see that you thanked someone, and if some people started thanking like that I think some people would be more appreciative of their thanks and won't see it as self advertising.
